I’ve played 25 hours of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, and I honestly don’t know how that happened.
I went into it looking for something cozy, something to fill the space while I wait for the next true Animal Crossing. I had just finished The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which is about as big and sprawling as a game can get. As much as I loved it, I didn’t want another serious, sprawling adventure. I wanted something gentler and cozier.
What surprised me is how satisfying the grind actually is. I decided early on that I wanted to unlock and level up every Life the game offers, and somewhere along the way I stopped worrying about pushing the main story forward. I’ve been replaying the same areas over and over through different roles, gathering as one Life, crafting as another, combat as another… and it somehow never feels repetitive.
The art style is charming. The music is light. The Lives system makes it easy to jump in for a short session but still feel like I’ve accomplished something. It’s layered, but approachable. There are a lot of systems working under the surface, but none of them feel overwhelming.
I think the moment it really clicked was when I realized I wasn’t rushing toward the next big story chapter. I was perfectly content revisiting a familiar section in a new way. I’m still early in the larger story, even 25 hours in. And I’m okay with that. Right now, this is exactly the kind of cozy I was hoping to find.
